8th Round of Mini-Lessons: Lindsley + STEM vs. STEAM
What is new about the STEAM approach to Arts integration that is different from what most teachers think arts integration is? Explain
STUDENTS' FEEDBACK
I think that Lindy had a great presentation. She was organized, concise, and enthusiastic. I think her warm up and usage of videos was a great way to get the students involved and learn about the metamorphasis of a butterfly.
1st video - Arts is so important because everything in life is a sort of presentation. Art type classes like drama, for example, are really just preparing students to perform in their lives. Drama is just another presentation.
2nd video - STEAM is like STEM, but using the A for arts. This includes adding the arts to the normal parts of education (science, technology, etc.). She stresses the importance of having an art factor and weaving it into the components of the traditional education (science, math, etc). She states that most projects anyways already have a creative component.
3rd video - I think that their approach is really great. I wish my teachers gave me more autonomy in my classes to create lessons and do whatever I wanted in order to show my understanding of certain concepts. I think their approach is especially great for science, because there is a lot of room for an art factor. I think this would've helped me immensely in school, because I have always really dreaded learning about science in the traditional ways (textbook, worksheets, etc.)
What's new about STEAM is that it allows the students to be really involved in their own learning process. It changes the traditional way you learn about STEM, by using creativity and an art component to learn about hard and traditional topics in school. I think it is really great, and I hope it gets used more in schools.
