Lesson Plan Objective: To teach students how to keep a gratitude journal
Grade: Twelfth grade
Domain: Visual Arts Education
Component: Personal Development
Objectives: To learn about gratitude, to reflect inwardly about what the student is grateful for,
and to establish personal goals in art (journaling)
Materials: Paper (handout attached below) and writing implement
Activity:
1. I will introduce the concept of what a gratitude journal is
2. I will ask if anyone had ever kept one or knows what it is.
•If yes, I will ask them to share.
3. I will give examples of my gratitude journal
4. I will share the benefits of keeping a gratitude journal and play the video
5. Activity (take 5 minutes to write down 3-5 things they are grateful for)
6. Group reflection
•Did they like it?
•Does anyone want to share what they wrote?
•Did they feel any of the benefits (even in a minor sense)?
•Is this something they could incorporate into their lives?
Assessment:
I will assess my students based off of if they did the activity and wrote down 3-5 things they are
grateful for. I cannot base my assessment on the specifics of what they write and grade them
based off of what they are grateful for because I am not the judge of what/who makes them
happy and for what/who they are grateful. However, I can assess how seriously they took the
assignment and if they completed it honestly and seriously.
**I have also attached a screenshot of the handout I would use for class if this were in person on the next page. The handout will also be displayed on the presentation.

Lesson Plan for DAN 385
Age Level: First-Grade
Component: Studio Skills
Objectives: Demonstrates self-direction and originality in visual expression
Competency: The student can produce a minimum of twelve works of original art through the:
1. manipulation of a variety of media
2. use of line, color, texture, shapes, and space
3. interpretation of personal ideas
I will achieve this component, objective and competency by reading the story It’s Christmas David to introduce the theme of Christmas to my Kindergarten class. After reading the story, I will review it to make sure the children are understanding the concept. Lastly, we will do a Santa drawing where the kids get to be creative and add their own details to it such as what they want for Christmas. They can also add a background, their elf or whatever other details they would like.
STUDENTS' FEEDBACK

Mini-Lessons
Olivia: I enjoyed how relevant Olivia’s lesson was to society today. Gratitude journals are such a healthy way to encourage positive mental health and well-being. Her video was very engaging and her overall lesson was dynamic and fun. I liked that she gave her students the opportunity to share what they are grateful for.
Cristina: She did a great job presenting her topic in a fun and appropriate way. She was able to make celebrating the Holidays enjoyable over zoom - which is something every family had to go through this year. I also liked her reading at the beginning.
Kennedy: Kennedy had very energetic energy that immediately had me engaged. Her warmup and videos were very helpful in teaching her topic. Her incorporation of the idea of growing plants is great for a classroom, as it teaches kids about how plants grow and also adds a sense of responsibility for them.
Video
Each video I watched was very informative on passion projects. They demonstrated how students can get involved in their own learning and actively participate while exercising important life skills in a fun way. When students want to learn for themselves, and not just because they have to, they are much more susceptible to growth and attentive attitudes. It is so so so important for students to feel like they are passionate about their education, and not just following the boring standardized curricula. Passion projects also give students the opportunity to find something they enjoy, even if they weren’t necessarily aware of their passions.
