7th Round of Mini-Lessons: Jerry, Moira and Xia
Lesson Plan Title: What’s the weather
Grade: Elementary School First grade
Domain: Visual Arts Education
Component: III Studio Skills
Objectives:
Observe the weather and learn 5 types of weather • know what water cycle is
Describe what kinds of clothes are appropriate for differents kinds of weather and draw them on paper.
Competency:
The student will complete the handout and use the what they learn about the weather to
create an art work. And they will show their work at the end.
Materials:
Pencil/drawing tools, Paper, Class set of the I’m Ready For Anything worksheet
Activity:
-
Learn and know 5 types of weather
-
Watch videos to learn about the weather
-
Know water cycle
-
Do the sample match
-
Do the activity of drawing “ I’m ready for anything”
•
•
Assessment:
Students will be assessed on the completion of work. They will also be assessed on their creativity and the main topic they express in the presentation. Collect work and assess if the weather matches the clothes students have chosen.

Final Mini-Lesson Plan
LESSON PLAN: Flower Math
OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this lesson is for students to demonstrate and enhance their studio skills through an activity aimed at developing an understanding of numbers and number lines.
GRADE LEVEL: Kindergarten
DOMAIN: Volume III, Visual Arts
COMPONENT: Studio Skills
OBJECTIVES:
-
- Draws and paints on large papers with large brushes, crayons, pencils, and magic markers (VA.A.1.1.2)
-
- Combines shapes by cutting and pasting two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional works (VA.A.1.1.2)
-
- Demonstrates self-direction and originality in visual expression (VA.A.1.1.3)
COMPETENCY:
- The student can develop:
-
- Fine and gross motor skills through the manipulation of materials (VA.A.1.1.2)
-
- Understanding of the properties of materials through the production of works of art (VA.A.1.1.3)
ACTIVITY:
Making flowers with petals corresponding to the student’s choice of a number between 1 and 10
- Materials needed:
-
- Large sheet of paper
-
- Flower handout
-
- Numberline handout
-
- Scissors
-
- Colored pencils/crayons
-
- Glue
-
- Markers
- Procedure:
-
- 1. Introduce the idea of a number line
-
- Ask students their previous knowledge of it
-
- Show an image of a number line and briefly explain its purpose
-
- Play a quick video on how the number line can be used for understanding
addition and subtraction
-
- Explain why it is important/helpful to use when first learning these skills
-
-
- 2. Introduce the activity
- Explain that the students will be creating a “math flower” by using the
number line to create a piece of art
- 3. Complete the activity
- Instruct the students to pick their favorite color and number between 1 and
10
-
- Ask the students to keep them engaged: can someone tell me their
favorite color or what their favorite number is?
-
- Remind them that it might be easier to pick a higher number so
you can do addition and subtraction problems
- Ask them for examples of addition and subtraction
problems
-
- Tell students to collect their supplies
-
- Instruct students on how to construct their flower using mine as an
example
-
- Put your favorite number in the middle of the flower
-
- Write THREE addition or subtraction problems that equal your
number on the petals
-
- Write out your number on another petal
-
- Make tally marks that are equal to the number
-
- On the last petal, draw the number of objects as the number on
your flower
-
- Decorate your flower, cut it out and glue it onto a blank sheet of
paper
-
- 4. If extra time is permitted, instruct students to get creative and decorate the
background of their flower
ASSESSMENT:
Students will be assessed on their safe, proper handling of materials, and final product of the math flower. The flower will be assessed by how well students handled scissors, colored, and used glue. Additionally, the students will be assessed on their creativity in choosing objects, colors, and any additional decoration on the background of the flower.
STUDENTS' FEEDBACK

Mini-Lessons
I think that Jerry was very creative with his lesson and how he incorporated nature, like the leaf to explain its structure. The activity was very well explained and it was very clear.
Moira’s lesson was really cute and introduced mathematical concepts in a concise way for younger audiences.
Xiaoyi’s lesson was by far super informative. The images and the video she used were very successful in helping her with the lesson. The activity she used went very well with her lesson.
Video
Eddy brought up a good point in the video about how the priorities in education have changed. The values are now placed on getting diplomas and attending college. This idea has grown students to ignore certain subjects that will not favor this goal that they are encouraged to pursue from a young age. Education is becoming more general and is overlooking the specific needs of each individual child.
