7Cs Survey

The student-perception survey (or 7 Cs Survey) was originally created and refined at Harvard University by Dr. Ron Ferguson. Tailored for grade levels K-2, 3-5 and 6-12, the surveys helped assess teachers’ content knowledge, pedagogy, and relationship-building skills. They allowed students to assess their classroom experience with each teacher across 7 dimensions.  Thus, the ‘Seven Cs’ Surveys, administered through Cambridge Education, measured “what teachers do (what students experience).” I have adapted the survey to measure the impact that online/remote/asynchronous (non-recorded) instruction has had on students.  The seven Cs’ are:

1.  Caring about students (Encouragement and emotional support)
2.  Captivating students (Learning seems interesting and relevant)
3.  Conferring with students (Students sense their ideas are respected)
4.  Clarifying*lessons (Success seems feasible)
5.  Consolidating knowledge (Ideas get connected and integrated)
6.  Challenging*students (Press for effort, perseverance, and rigor)
7.  Controlling*behavior (Culture of cooperation and peer support)

7Cs: Items

I divided the survey in two parts: “Before Spring Recess” and “After Scoring Recess” to compare and contrast the results. Every one of the 7 dimension has 3 items. Please, select “Totally True”, “Mostly True”, “Somewhat”, “Mostly Untrue” or “Totally Untrue” to evaluate both, “what teachers do and what students experience.” Circle in each item the evaluation that best fits each description.

Mini-Lessons

Liliana: Her presentation was very interactive which is important for that age group. Great job!

Jason: Love how he drew in his presentation. It was engaging. Nice work!

Zalikha: The ocean lesson was great. She was very motivated which made it great.

Video: Rita emphasized the importance of every child needing human connection and relationships between them and their teacher. Every child deserves an adult to be a mentor for them. Her talk was very inspirational.

Lilliana

- I loved Lilliana’s lesson about the solar system! Her warm-up video was super cute and informative, each planet sang and explained its components. Her first activity was super fun too. Overall she taught the lesson super well, she was calm in her tone and very sweet. Her last activity about creating the solar system was super creative. Lilliana is definitely a natural in the teaching world and I wouldn’t change a thing about her lesson.

Jason

- I think Jason’s lesson about plants was super clever. His PowerPoint was created very beautifully and his video was packed with information. I enjoyed how he made sure the class knew every part of a plant. He even taught us about chlorophyll, I wasn’t aware that came from plants. His activity was very cute, I liked the idea of drawing a plant. Overall he did a great job teaching the lesson, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Zalikha

- Zalikhas lesson about the ocean was perfect for kindergarten. She made sure to go over the five different oceans including the pacific, southern, Atlantic, Indian, and arctic. She talked about ocean life and made sure to go over the lesson slowly so the class understood. She broke down the lesson in a perfect way, she was very calm when teaching. I enjoyed her video on the history of the ocean and I absolutely adored her activity of creating an ocean in a bottle. Overall I really enjoyed her lesson and thought she did a great job, I wouldn’t change a thing.
