Maddie Raynor

Arts and Communicating Emotions

5th/6th grade

Maddie Raynor

Objectives:

  • Describe how certain works of art communicate information or emotion

  • Develops a beginning to descriptive vocabulary

Intentions for what the class will gain out of the lesson:

  • Encouraging students to think about their own feelings in these harder times when growing up

  • Enforce the class to think deeper about how artists have different intentions when they create a piece of work. Just like in all the arts (music, theater, writing, etc) the artist has a well-thought out plan for what message they are trying to send to their target audience.

Plan of Lesson:

  1. Talk about emotions we feel on a day to day basis, what do we think of when we think of these emotions?

  • Encourage students to talk and think about their feelings before we look at the pieces of art

  1. Look at 5 pieces of art that have intentions to portray different emotions

  • Call on students to talk about what each painting makes them think of

  1. Ask students what we would we make art to portray our own emotions

  • All students should have a paper with a couple of different colored crayons and markers

  • Give students all 3 minutes to draw what makes them think of an emotion of their choice, get the whole class to show what they drew

  1. Talking about different types of art (ie photography, sculpture, painting)

  • Ask a student what they would do if they were a photographer portraying their emotion of choice, sculpture, and painting, etc

    STUDENTS' FEEDBACK

    On the Video

    Jamie Karen

    1. After watching the video, what point is Dr. Saenz trying to make about people who enter the field of Education.

Dr. Saenz starts by discussing the impact that a teacher has on your life.  He received two letters written by two teachers from his high school.  They told him how special he was and gave him to motivation to start.  It made him rethink the way he thought of himself.  He originally thought he was a loser and he completely messed up his life.  These letters made him rethink who he was and what he was.  He decided to enroll in a college course.  The teachers gave him the confidence in himself and allowed him to turn his life around.  His teachers saw something in him that he didn't see in himself.  He completely changed his persona!

    2. Do you agree or disagree with him? Explain why?

I agree with Dr. Saenz, teachers have the capacity AND CONFIDENCE to change their students lives.  The educators spoke truth into his life and turned his life around.  Teachers are so powerful and have the ability to give their students hope no matter how messed up the student may appear to be.

    3. What moved you about his talk?

This talk moved me because it showed me how much of an impact I might have on my future students.  I am so excited and I would love to help students change their lives for the better.  I can't wait to make an impact and make students happy, enjoy life, and love learning!

    On the Mini-Lessons

    Jayci Eskalyo

    Paulina

This was a great lesson and it was very engaging. I like that she linked something coming up as a seasonal activity for the class. Great job!

    Allie-

This was a really cool choice. I like how she started it by explaining the objective because it helped explain the expectations for the day. It was a great idea to use the origami to give compliments to other people in the class. I also liked how we said what we learned. That is very important for reinforcing the lesson. Great job!

    Maddie-

I liked how the lesson opened up with the objectives and a PowerPoint showing different kinds of art. We were linking our emotions to the different pictures of art. This lesson was very engaging and made us gain a better understanding of the subject. I like how she made a point to say "there are no wrong answers." If I were actually in the class that would have made me feel very comfortable and more eager to share.
