Grade 2: Studio Skills
Component: 7. Constructs by cutting, folding, and inserting with or without glue
Competency: The Student can demonstrate good craftsmanship through their production of works of art.
If I was in the classroom of a second grade class I would propose an exercise like this by instructing students to bring in 4 of their favorite Magazines and Newspaper articles. This would first teach them the concept of responsibility. Then once they have all their materials, I would instruct them to start using their motor skills and craftsmanship skills to start cutting, folding, and gluing their favorite pictures on to a piece of paper to make a collage. I would not help the student until they at least tried it on their own, which ultimately follows Dewey's Progressive Education concept of Doing by learning. When it comes to grading, I would not grade on how pretty or nice their project looks, however, I will grade based off commitment and completion of the project.
