Part III

Installation Art

Installation art is a term generally used to describe artwork located in three-dimensional interior space as the word "install" means putting something inside of something else. In our class we adapt this concept to arrange readymades and found objects in order to create an installation that has meaning.

Concepts Addressed today:

Readymades

Found Objects

Wabi-Sabi

Watch the videos below:

READY MADES

The readymades of Marcel Duchamp are ordinary manufactured objects that the artist selected and modified, as an antidote to what he called "retinal art". By simply choosing the object and repositioning or joining, titling and signing it, the Found object became art.

FOUND OBJECTS

Found object originates from the French objet trouvé, describing art created from undisguised, but often modified, objects or products that are not normally considered materials from which art is made, often because they already have a non-art function.

WABI-SABI

In traditional Japanese aesthetics, wabi-sabi is a world-view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is "imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete"

Question 5

What is the importance of ready mades and found objects when creating installation art pieces?

STUDENTS' WORK

The Hierarchy of Info

This art work shows books I had laying around and a remote. The books are stacked at the bottom and the cup that holds up the remote signifies that the remote is sitting high up like on a "podium" or a chair that royalty would sit on. This is conveying that children/people nowadays rather ignore books/written info in return for watching television and receiving their information via online/virtual platforms instead of old fashioned sources.

These were all the items around me while we were in class. My coffee, glasses, notebooks, planner, and pens are things I use daily.

Not Just Riding Waves

Throughout 2020, I faced many hardships, like the rest of the world.  Due to the pandemic, my germaphobia definetly increased which is where the soap and purrel comes into my piece. I also am a great hypocondriac which is why tylenol and a thermometer is in my piece.  The pandemic also did not help my mental health.  My anxiety worsened, but with that I grew stronger.  I began to take an interest in bettering myself.  This piece shows how I have grown and although it may look like one big mess to most people, I see obstacles that need to be overcome by being proactive.  Although these obstacles are frustrating and hard, in the end will be a beautiful outcome.  Strength will be found.  One will become empowered and realize they can achieve anything they set their mind to.  So although it is easy to get caught up in the mess of life, it is important to put yourself/mental health first and become the best version of yourself!
