Lesson Plan

Title: The Three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Component: Environmental Awareness

Age Level: Grades K-3

Objective: Students will learn the meaning of “The Three R’s”, and how to use them to help keep our planet healthy. Students will be able to determine how they can reuse and reduce, and what materials can be recycled.

Curriculum Standards: This lesson plan could be used in science education, and more specifically geared towards Earth Day.

Plan:

- Warm up:

●We know it is important to keep our bodies healthy, but it is just as important to keep our PLANET healthy! One way we can do this is by Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling.

●Assessment: Ask the following questions to gain a better understanding of students’ prior knowledge:

○What do you already know about Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling?

○Why is it important?

○What are some ways to reduce? Reuse? Recycle?

Presentation:

- Watch a short video about The Three R’s. This is included to gather the students’ attention and educate them on the topic in a fun way.

- Separately go through each of The Three R’s. Explain what they mean and provide examples of each.

(Assessment)

- Be sure to ask the students if they can think of any additional examples.

- The Three R’s help reduce trash pollution, but that isn’t the only thing that is bad for the planet.

- Address the benefits of planting trees!

Activity: Using any materials that can be Reduced, Reused, or Recycled, students will create a piece of art. Examples are provided.

- Materials

●Reducible, Reusable, or Recyclable materials

○Paper

○Cardboard toilet paper roll

○Plastic water bottle

●Markers

●Glue

●Straw or pipe cleaners

●Other materials depending on the craft chosen

Conclusion:
